The Tack Room
If you ever find yourself wandering around Newmarket, UK - especially anywhere near Palace Street - The Tack Room is one spot you must check out. Located at Palace St, Newmarket CB8 8EP, The Tack Room is more than just a restaurant. It’s a go-to haven for great food, drinks, and a relaxed yet vibrant dining atmosphere that caters to just about everyone - whether you’re dropping in for a solo lunch or catching up with friends over cocktails and live music.
From the moment you walk in, there's a comforting mix of history and contemporary flair. Housed within the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing & Sporting Art, The Tack Room gives a nod to Newmarket’s deep equestrian roots while serving up a modern British-European menu that’s anything but ordinary.
The menu at The Tack Room is smartly curated, offering a variety of dishes that appeal to different cravings and dietary preferences. Among their most popular dishes, Eggs Benedict is a brunch-time favorite. The hollandaise is creamy, tangy, and silky smooth - basically, brunch perfection. Then there’s the Roast Sirloin of Beef, which comes cooked just right and melts in your mouth, especially when paired with a glass from their impressive wine list.
If you're after something lighter, the Smoked Salmon Salad or Halloumi dishes are beautifully presented and full of fresh flavor. The Pasta Bolognese is rich and comforting, great for those days when only a hearty meal will do. And if you’re like me and judge a place based on its sides, the Sweet Potato Fries are golden, crisp, and straight-up addictive.
You’ll also find plenty of small plates and healthy options for those who like to nibble and share. But if you're in the mood to go big, don’t miss the Filet Steak or Steak Tartare. The portions are generous without going overboard, and presentation? Always on point.
Oh, and the desserts? Let’s just say their Cheese Scone and Butter is next-level, especially with a steaming Iced Latte or a tea from their carefully chosen tea selection.
It’s not just about the food here. The Tack Room offers a well-curated drinks menu that stands out in Newmarket. Whether you're into craft beers, artisan cocktails, or just a good old-fashioned gin and tonic, they’ve got you covered. The gin selection is solid - ideal for a sunny afternoon out on their outdoor patio.
Speaking of drinks, their cocktail list deserves its own spotlight. It’s creative without trying too hard, and you can tell their bartenders take pride in the craft. There’s also a solid list of wines and spirits, including some standout reds that pair beautifully with their red meat offerings.
The Tack Room strikes a great balance - it’s casual enough that you can pop in solo or in jeans, but still feels elevated enough for a special occasion. The staff are warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about the food and drinks they serve, which always adds to the experience.
There's live music on certain nights that really brings the space to life without overwhelming your dinner conversation. The interior is charming and tastefully styled, but if the weather’s nice, the outdoor seating is a great spot to people-watch or just soak in the Newmarket atmosphere.
One of the best things about The Tack Room - and something that’s often overlooked in restaurant reviews - is how accessible it is. The venue has a wheelchair-accessible entrance, car park, seating, and toilet, which makes it an inclusive space for everyone. That’s not something you find every day, and it absolutely deserves a shoutout.
Honestly? Just about anyone. It’s popular for lunch and dinner, and especially good if you're dining solo - the layout and vibe make it comfortable to just sit back and enjoy your meal without feeling out of place. It also caters to both meat-lovers and those who prefer healthy options or smaller bites.
Whether you’re looking for a cozy spot to unwind after exploring Newmarket, a stylish space for date night, or a reliable venue with great coffee and dessert, The Tack Room manages to tick all the boxes.

Reviews
Travelling through Newmarket we chose The Tack Room for Sunday lunch, and so glad we did, what a find. The roast beef lunch was exceptional, service was attentive and what a wonderful setting. We had not heard about the museum next door before our arrival but after lunch did the tour, meeting the retired racehorses. Lovely way to spend the Easter bank holiday. Would recommend and definitely like to return one day.
The Tack Room is a great place to go for a nice lunch. The food is very reasonably priced for the quality and the menu has some great options. I would recommend the open sandwiches. Definitely worth booking in advance during peak times as it can get a little busy.
I'm leaving a review after my third time here. The food is always good, but the Sunday roast was amazing (in my photos chicken and lamb). We also liked the full English breakfast, and the service is always very attentive and nice.
The sausages look so gorgeous!! (I just heard that Newmarket is a famous spot for sausage making). I really appreciate the cream cheese on the side so I can control how much to add. The citrus mascarpone isn’t too heavy. One of the lighter main dishes. Nice space. Friendly service. Quite pricy for the simple food.
I went to the tack room the other week with my family. It was a lovely sunny day and the outside seating area is really nice. The place has plenty of character with the small horse racing museum and retired racing horses round the corner. It’s a nice chilled out atmosphere and the staff were really nice. I ordered the tack burger and me and my sister shared the focacia sharer with cheese and caramelised onions. Both were delicious, but they forgot to bring out our starter and so we had it with our main. The sweet potato’s were nice and crispy and the burger was hefty and tasted good. The only downside is the food takes a while to come
